With a goal of building a culture of philanthropy though giving back and saying thanks, Broward College Foundation launched its inaugural Philanthropy 2024 Week across the Central, North, and South Campuses from September 2-7.
Partnering with Student Government Association (SGA) leadership on the three campuses, SGA leaders themselves, and by recruiting other students, wrote 280 thank you cards to staff and faculty donors. In addition, they engaged in peer-to-peer fundraising, persuading their fellow Seahawks to contribute at least $1 to scholarships. In the end, they helped acquire 181 mostly first-time student donors. Some faculty and staff seeing the energy and enthusiasm of our students came forward and offered additional donations too.
One of the goals of Philanthropy Week was to highlight that philanthropy comes in many forms.
“Monetary support of BC and its students through scholarships; volunteering such as at events like our campus beautification; and mentoring such as being on alumni panels where students can interact with alumni or alumni coming back to campus as guest speakers- these are all forms of philanthropy and giving back. I encourage our alumni to partner with us and give back as they are able,” said Anthony Stewart, Alumni Engagement Manager.
This successful week culminated in Campus Beautification Day. 100 alumni, student, staff, faculty and community volunteers woke up early Saturday morning September 7 and headed to Central Campus. All ages assisted with planting milkweed, painting birdhouses, rocks, and wind chimes, and spreading fresh mulch while enjoying cool treats provided by Playa Bowls, as well as hot dogs and snacks.
Organized by Broward College Cares and Broward College Alumni & Friends, this event was a celebration of service and a collective effort to enhance our Central Campus for our students. BC Cares was launched in the fall of 2017, marking the College's dedication to fostering a culture of service and community engagement among its faculty, staff and their families.
Broward College employee and graduate Jessica Figueroa, who directed the marketing and promotion of Philanthropy Week, had this to say about the experience: "Philanthropy Week was a meaningful way for students to experience firsthand the power of giving back to Broward College. As a proud graduate, I used to think I didn't make enough as a student to give back. But I’ve realized it’s the selfless act of giving—whether through time, effort, or resources—that truly matters. It’s about creating a culture of philanthropy, where students can give back while still benefiting from the generosity of others. This week was about showing them that everyone can make an impact, no matter where they are in life, and I couldn't be more proud."
