Artist and alumna Claudette G. Sernius graduated with High Honors in 2019 and is making herself known as one of South Florida's up and coming young artists. She is also an entrepreneur, having founded GOMO Art & Design Studios specializing in creating visually stunning designs that leave a lasting impression. We asked Claudette to tell us her story about her deep and ongoing connect with her alma mater.
Claudette, where did you grow up and what motivated you to attend Broward College?
I grew up in Dominican Republic as the youngest of 3. I always dreamed of studying in the United States and I had the opportunity to move and finish my High School years and then started looking for Colleges and Universities. Initially, I wanted to move away from Florida due to my living situation, but I’m very happy I stayed. Staying local allowed me to stay close to my grandparents, and for us to be able to rely on and support each other.
Can you tell us about one or two moments that stand out about your time at the College?
During my time at Broward College there are too many great moments that I will cherish forever. I would say one of the most crucial moments was when I encountered the Social and Behavioral Sciences and Human Services Department, what it was then building 1, and get a job that would change the course of my life forever. I was able to meet many people that were very involved and invested in making sure you succeed, not just in school but in life. Through the Professional Enhancement Program I was able to build peer and mentor relationships that will last a lifetime, apply and obtain experiences and connections that would change the way I view the world, and created that desire in me to make sure I impact more lives the way this impacts mine. Through this experience I was faced with opportunities that helped me with public speaking, leadership and service. At Broward College I was developed to be a leader, at home, at work and in the community.
Did you have any favorite professors or people at the College who were important to you as a student?
Yes, Dr. Balzora. I was very fortunate to have him as a professor, leader and mentor during my time at Broward College. How has guided me through my educational and professional path. He has imparted tremendous knowledge that will empower me to maximize my opportunities and minimize any excuses. His leadership is based on service will continue to guide and impact my life and the lives of those who I will serve.
Were there any particular resources at the college that were important to you when you were a student?
When I started there was this program called Get REAL Program, that really gave me a solid foundation to be successful at Broward College. Due to my lack of guidance and support after high school, I enrolled at Broward College, with no idea how I was going to pay for tuition, books, or housing, because I had no job, no car, no scholarships, and no family. The Get REAL Program Broward College contacted me because I qualified for the program. They assisted me with a job on campus, a scholarship to cover my books and tuition, and guidance that helped me with my classes. Unfortunately, I was one of the last students to participate in that program.
Were you a scholarship recipient as a student? If so, how did that assist you?
Once I started Broward College I received many scholarships and awards. This helped me really on the transition from child to adult, because I did not have any support from my family these scholarships and recognitions gave me peace and encouraged me to keep going and not give up on life.
Where did you go after Broward College? What was your path? How did what you learn at the College prepare you for your path?
I attended Florida International University (FIU) after Broward College (BC). BC is a smaller school than FIU, that provided a lot more time and attention from faculty and staff to invest in me and help me grow. BC helped me understand that I’m in charge of my own learning and education, and to always seek opportunities. That way I was able to maximize my time at FIU and seek mentors. This has helped in school and life, as I dive into entrepreneurship and building my business. Seeking mentors and opportunities has been crucial for my personal and professional development.
What do you wish other people knew about Broward College, something you think is a best kept secret or a something that makes our college stand out among other institutions?
That a college may not have the status of an ivy league or a university, but you don’t always find quality in status. Broward College has a remarkable faculty and staff that focuses on investing in the lives of students, who are the future of our world and community. Specifically, the Professional Enhancement Program I believe is one of the best kept secrets. This program is small, but the impact it has continue to ripple into the community and leaders during decades.
