Interview with Danay
Danay, where did you grow up and what motivated you to pursue studies at Broward College?
I am a Cuban immigrant who grew up in Hollywood and Pembroke Pines. Since we did not have the money for college, I registered at BCC as it was then known and paid for school while I worked.
Can you tell us about one or two moments that stand outa bout your time at the College?
I was involved with both P’an Ku and the Observer, the college paper and I loved every minute that I spent at each. Putting together the magazine was a wonderful experience which included all-nighters with the team to ensure we made it to the print deadline. It was also eye opening to see just how much talent was represented in the student body.
Did you have any favorite professors or people at the College who were important to you as a student?
I am not alone when I say Jerry Elam was wonderful and while I didn’t get to know him as well as I wished, old friends who were also part of the newspaper still speak of him fondly of today.
Where did you go after Broward College? What was your path? How did what you learn at the College prepare you for your path?
I jumped into the startup world right from BCC and followed an exciting career in digital marketing. In fact, many of the things I learned about writing and editing translated into my career.
Do you have any final thoughts about your connection to the College?
I have many wonderful memories from my time at Broward College and appreciate the fact that there was an affordable avenue for continuing education for those who cannot afford universities or don’t want to accumulate debt.
