We are delighted to introduce our family of alumni and friends to Broward College graduate Nelson Fernandez. Nelson earned an Associate of Science degree from Broward College in 1986 and has stayed connected with his alma mater ever since.
We asked Nelson about his time as a student and his thoughts about Broward College’s importance to the community.
Nelson, where did you grow up and what motivated you to study at Broward College?
I grew up in Miami Lakes, but just before I started college we started a family business in Development and Construction. We decided to open our office in Hollywood; South Campus allowed me to do classes in the morning and then head right to work on Taft Street.
Were there any resources at the college that were important to you when you were a student?
In 1986, personal computers were just starting to be available to small businesses. I was able to utilize resources at the College to familiarize myself with the recently invented computers and learn how they could benefit our new business.
Can you tell us about something that stands out about your time at the College?
Taking a Scuba Diving Certification Class, that’s something that’s not available at every college!
Where did you go after Broward College?
I got an Associates of Science Degree in Business Administration and decided to get the rest of my education on the job.
What do you wish other people knew about Broward College, something you think is a best-kept secret or something that makes our college stand out among other institutions?
It is no longer the college I attended. There are very few paths that are not available. It allows hometown kids to stay at home, reduce the cost of commuting and living expenses, all while getting the education you need. Internships are available right in your back yard where you eventually will want to live.
As a donor to Broward College, what inspires your philanthropy year after year?
Going out of town for college is not something that is attainable to all or even most students. I love the fact that the barrier to entry is removed for many students, and the local business community is very entrenched in helping and supporting local students.
