Nicholas Surdel acquired his Associate of Arts degree with High Honors in 2016. Nicholas, like many BC students, was a first-generation college student. He started at BC through the dual-enrollment program and transferred to the University of Florida upon completing his Associate degree.
At UF he rapidly developed his own research program, writing a thesis that was eventually awarded Summa cum Laude. This research experience allowed him to land an internship at Harvard, which deepened his appreciation of science. Before starting his Ph.D. studies at Yale University, he completed his Master's in Cognitive Neuroscience at William & Mary. Although he presently studies how we form mental models of robots, he is currently transitioning his research to more applied settings in preparation for a career in industry.
Regarding the impact of Broward College on his path, Nicholas says: “Broward College provided me an opportunity to set my record straight. Like many of my compatriots, I had to work during high school, and thus my grades were not representative of my potential. Through BC, I was given a second chance to work hard and produce a GPA that I was proud of, at a price I could afford. This new GPA and experience provided me with the ability to win competitive scholarships, opening the door to further opportunities, creating a positive feedback loop that propelled me rapidly upward. But for the opportunity that colleges like BC provides, this pathway would not have been possible. As such, I encourage all serious students looking to develop their education further to contact me. Use your alumni network and do your homework. There is no limit to your potential.”
